Environmentalists, civic groups discuss 2nd Yaphank power plant proposal
Environmentalists, activists and civic groups weighed in on a proposal to build one of the largest power plants on Long Island.
The project involves the construction of the Caithness Long Island II next to the existing Caithness Long Island Energy Center. Project leaders say the new power plant will help meet the growing energy needs on the island by using clean technology.
Union workers say the project will also boost the economy.
Some Yaphank residents believe that the town is taking on too much responsibility for the rest of Long Island.
Some residents who attended the meeting say a new power plant in the area would bring much needed revenue to the school district.
The Town of Brookhaven board will take several weeks to review public commentary before a decision is made regarding the project's future.
