The Massapequa man who authorities say staged his own death to cash in on a life insurance policy is in a Long Island hospital and has not yet been charged in the case, sources tell News 12 Long Island. Raymond Roth, 47, was reported missing July 28 after he supposedly disappeared into the water off Jones Beach, but later contacted his brother, who in turn contacted police. Court documents show that Roth and his son, Jonathan, allegedly carried out a plan to create the false impression that the elder Roth had died. Jonathan Roth, 22, was charged with conspiracy and insurance fraud yesterday. Documents obtained by News 12 Long Island show that the younger Roth admitted to park police that he filed a false missing persons report although he knew his father was fleeing to Florida. Jonathan Roth is due back in court tomorrow for a routine hearing. He's being held on $10,000 bond or $5,000 cash bail. An attorney for Raymond's wife, Evana, says they have learned he took out a life insurance policy on her back in May, around the time that he transferred their mortgage into his own name. Evana Roth says she believes her life may have been at risk and she didn't even know it. Her attorney says she is filing for divorce.
