3 duck hunters rescued when boat capsizes off Mt. Sinai

Police say a man and two teens were rescued after their boat capsized in the waters off Mount Sinai Sunday morning.

The three were duck hunting out of Mount Siani Harbor when their craft overturned about 200 yards off the shores of Cedar Beach.

The man called 911 on his cellphone, and crews with the Suffolk Police Marine Bureau and Mount Sinai Fire Department responded. The three were taken back to shore.

The hunters have been identified as James Knipe, 47, of Middle Island; his son, also named James Knipe, age 17; and Kendrick Pisano, age 16, of Miller Place.

Authorities say the three are being treated for exposure and hypothermia. The Knipes were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, and Pisano was taken to Mather Memorial Hospital.

The water temparature at the time was about 45 degrees. The Marine Bureau is reminding boaters and hunters that state law requires personal floatation devices be worn at all times on vessels less than 21 feet in length.
