Man fatally shot outside Brentwood home

A 26-year-old man was fatally shot in front of his Brentwood home early Friday morning.

Police arrived at 27 Meadowbrook Drive after a 911 caller reported shots fired around 5:35 a.m. The victim, identified as Florentino Hernandez-Zavala, was pronounced dead at the scene.

News 12 Long Island spoke exclusively with the victim's father, Santos Hernandez. He said his son was not involved in gang activity, which has plagued the area for years. He said the shooting occurred while Hernandez-Zavala went outside to start up his car to take his girlfriend to work.

Police say the shooter was waiting outside for him.

Santos Hernandez says police told him they're investigating whether the El Salvadorian gang MS-13 is responsible for his son's killing. The gang is suspected in at least six murders last year in Brentwood, including five teenagers who once attended Brentwood High School.

All six murders remain unsolved. Police will not comment on a possible motive or whether they believe Friday's shooting is gang-related
