Woman killed, man hurt in Sunrise Highway crash

Police say a woman was killed and a man was injured in a chain-reaction crash that involved multiple vehicles early Saturday morning in Holbrook.

Investigators say a 2013 Honda that was headed west on Sunrise Highway rear-ended two vehicles, a Toyota and a Nissan, near Exit 50 around 5 a.m.

The Toyota was forced to the shoulder of the highway, while the Nissan lost control and hit a guardrail, police say.

The Honda spun around and ended up facing east in the westbound lanes of the highway, where it was then struck head-on by another Nissan vehicle.

The driver of that second Nissan, identified as 28-year-old Melisa Umanzor, of Bay Shore, was pronounced dead at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital.

The driver of the Honda, 22-year-old Copiague resident Rolfy Adames, was hospitalized with minor injuries.

The drivers of the Toyota and the first Nissan vehicle involved were not injured.

All of the vehicles were impounded for safety inspections. Police are asking anyone with information on the crash to call the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552.
