Political abuse, corruption and nepotism are among the allegations in two lawsuits being filed against the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter.
Several people, including current and former employees, filed the suit against the shelter, claiming that its shelter's director is creating a bad work environment and that animals are suffering because of it.
Shelter employees say they worry the director will not be replaced because they claim he is part of the political establishment.
"These ladies are speaking out...to help the less fortunate," says attorney, Jonathon Tand. "They want to help the dogs and the cats and any other animal that's unfortunate enough to come through that shelter to find a loving home."
Tand adds that the lawsuits target the Town of Hempstead, Town Supervisor Anthony Santino and the shelter's director, Michael Pastore, among others.
The female accusers say Pastore has terrorized them at work. Wendy Cariello, who has since resigned, says that when a dog named "Violet" jumped on her, she fell backward and hit her head. At that point, she says Pastore euthanized the dog, even though she pleaded against it.
The women also say Pastore hired people who were politically affiliated, rather than qualified personnel, which has been detrimental to the animals.
News 12 visited the shelter in Wantagh and was told that Pastore was not available. A Town of Hempstead spokesperson says it does not comment on pending litigation.
