Study: Some parents use screens over 9 hours a day
It's not just kids who are glued to their smartphones and tablets for several hours a day, but parents too, according to a new study.
The study by Common Sense Media says parents of tweens and teens are plugged in more than nine hours a day.
Whether it's texting, tweeting, using Google, working, checking the weather or sports scores, all those actions require the use of a screen and have become part of everyday life for many. Laura Schnier, of Shoreham, says she uses a screen at least two hours a day. Fran DiPaola, of Mount Sinai, guesstimates about four or so hours of screen-on time.
So are the devices a distraction? Experts say they could be because children mimic what their parents do.
"We need to get parents to be more realistic about what their activities are doing and modeling to kids as opposed to what they think they're modeling and that takes real conversations," says Dr. Delaney Ruston, of Stony Brook Medicine.
