Man dies of injuries following wrong-way Sunrise Highway crash that killed 2 others

A passenger who was hospitalized after a wrong-way crash on Sunrise Highway earlier this week has succumbed to his injuries, bringing the death toll to three.
Jonathan Valladares, 25, of Brentwood, died days after he was critically injured in the crash that happened in the early morning hours of Nov. 27, police say.
As News 12 has reported, Valladares was a passenger in a 2004 Infiniti vehicle that was heading east in the westbound lanes near Exit 57. The Infiniti collided with a Chevy van, killing both the driver of the Infiniti, 23-year-old Kevin Melgar, and the driver of the van, 49-year-old Ozcan Ayyidiz.
A Suffolk police officer was also injured while responding to the crash scene when a street sweeper vehicle passed through a road closure and rammed into the back of his cruiser.
It remains unclear how the Inifinti wound up traveling the wrong way on the highway.
Detectives had previously asked anyone with information on the wrong-way crash to call the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552.
