A 10-year-old Valley Stream girl is being hailed a hero for saving her family from a fire.
Diana Loveras says it was about 6:30 a.m. Monday when she ran into her mother's bedroom to wake her up because their apartment was on fire.
Diana, her mother and two younger siblings raced out of the burning apartment on East Hawthorne Avenue. Diana says her mother doesn't speak English very well, so she called 911 herself.
The fifth-grader is shy and still a bit shaken up from Monday's events. She says fire officials and her family told her how proud they are of her cool, calm and quick-thinking demeanor.
The family returned to the apartment Tuesday to assess some of the damage. They are now staying with nearby relatives. Diana's father says he was at work when the fire broke out and that he raced home as soon as his wife called him.
Fire officials are investigating the blaze, which they say does not appear to be suspicious.
