Shawana Hughes, of Oyster Bay, gets 1 year in jail in connection with abuse of Miss Harper

An Oyster Bay woman was sentenced today in connection with the abuse of the pit bull puppy named Miss Harper.

Former owner Shawana Hughes was sentenced to one year in jail and five months probation.

Hughes was accused of bringing Miss Harper to a vet tech for an unlicensed surgery.

The SPCA says this was a very influential case for stopping animal abuse.

As News 12 has reported, Miss Harper was found in 2014 with her ears and part of her leg cut off.
