Brookhaven asks MTA to relocate Yaphank LIRR station
Brookhaven officials are asking the MTA to relocate the Yaphank train station.
Under the proposal, the station would be moved to an industrial park near Ramsey Road in Shirley. It is currently located at a county complex off Yaphank Avenue.
"This would make a difference for thousands of commuters," says Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine. "It would create thousands of new jobs...it would fill these industrial parks, it would benefit Brookhaven lab."
Romaine says a new Yaphank station would better serve residents in Mount Sinai, Manorville and Shoreham. Officials say moving the station would also attract more businesses to set up shop in the area.
Brookhaven officials say the plan would cost $70 to $80 million. They hope the MTA will approve the proposal as part of its five-year capital plan by the end of the year.
The MTA says it's evaluating the proposal.
