Driver smashes through Patchogue building; 5 injured
A car crashed into a Patchogue building Thursday and burst into flames.
The 2015 Nissan Versa was barely recognizable after the incident.
Surveillance video shows it speeding along South Ocean Avenue before barreling out of control through the intersection at Main Street and slamming into a building under construction. There were workers inside building what will eventually be a new restaurant. Police say five of them were treated for minor injuries.
The 34-year-old driver was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center in serious condition.
Police say the car was "traveling at a high rate of speed," but have not yet interviewed the driver due to his condition.
Patchogue Mayor Paul Pontieri says he shudders to think of the damage had the restaurant been open.
"It would have been people sitting at the bar and sitting at the restaurant," he says. "So this conversation would have been a different conversation."
Police did not immediately identify the driver but say he is expected to survive.
