Residents oppose Town of Brookhaven zoning changes
The Brookhaven Town Board is voting on whether to rezone more than 2,000 properties in the four hamlets along Montauk Highway, and some residents are opposed to the idea.
Darby Napoli has lived in East Moriches for almost 20 years. She says she loves the quiet, quaint charm of her community and wants to keep it that way.
Efforts have been underway for about a year to preserve the small-town feel of Moriches, Center Moriches, East Moriches and Eastport.
Activists say they're not anti-business, they just don't want big businesses in their hamlets.
Brookhaven Town Councilman Dan Panico says the zoning change would "preserve the character of the community" and "protect the property values."
It took the Town Board about four hours to vote on 55 different properties in Moriches and East Moriches. Forty-six of those zoning changes were adopted and none were denied. A couple properties, however, are being held over until the next meeting in September.
