A former NYPD officer and Sept. 11 first responder is on a mission to honor the victims of the Dallas shootings.
John Mangan, of Levittown, stood alone on the side of Hempstead Turnpike with a sign supporting police. It's his way of honoring the five Dallas officers who were killed in what's being called the deadliest day for U.S. law enforcement since Sept. 11.
"I don't see the outcry for the five victims that were policemen," Mangan says."Their only crime was wearing their uniform, protecting the people and even that day, they protected the protesters and shielded them from the bullets."
Mangan first created the sign almost two years ago, after NYPD Commissioner William Bratton said two city officers were assasinated and deliberately targeted for their uniform. On Friday, Mangan called his sign-maker to have more names added to what's become a growing list.
Mangan takes the sign to police funerals to show support for officers and their families. He plans to hold his sign at Ground Zero on Sunday.
"These five policemen had nothing to do with it. Five police officers lost their lives from hatred and that's a shame," he says.
