Man accused in fatal DWI crash pleads not guilty

A Queens man accused of killing an Uber driver while driving drunk on the Long Island Expressway in April pleaded not guilty to a handful of charges at his arraignment Tuesday.
Police say Bonifacio Enriquez, 35, struck and killed 34-year-old Roohul Ameen as he was reattaching a loose bumper near Exit 41 in Jericho. The impact knocked Ameen into the left lane of traffic, where another car hit him, according to prosecutors. The second driver is not being charged.
Police say Ameen, who worked as an Uber driver in Manhattan, was heading home to Bay Shore around 2 a.m. He was a husband and father of four.
Enriquez's attorney called the accident unavoidable and said alcohol played no part in it.
Enriquez pleaded not guilty to second-degree manslaughter, second-degree vehicular manslaughter, second-degree assault and operating under the influence of alcohol.
Enriquez's license remains suspended, and he has surrendered his passport.
Enriquez is out on bail and is due back in court Aug. 2.
