Man gets 3-9 years in drug-fueled fatal wrong-way crash
A Massapequa man was sentenced Friday afternoon to three to nine years in prison for the wrong-way drug-fueled crash that killed his passenger.
Michael Bantel apologized in the courtroom before the sentence was delivered. He admitted to having a drug problem and said he was getting treatment.
Bantel pleaded guilty to killing Anthony Sylvia while driving high on drugs on Sunrise Highway last May. Police say Bantel crossed the median and crashed into a pickup truck, killing his 28-year-old passenger.
The driver of the pickup, Jenny Deronde of Lindenhurst, survived the crash.
Prosecutors had asked for Bantel to receive four to 12 years behind bars for his guilty plea, but the judge decided to give him a lighter sentence.
