Bill aims to limit pain pill prescriptions
New restrictions have been placed on pain pills to help people from getting hooked on powerful medications.
Currently, doctors in New York state can prescribe up to a 30-day supply of opiates. Gov. Andrew Cuomo is expected to sign a bill cutting down that supply to just seven days.
The bill, which was passed by state legislators, aims to reduce the growing pill epidemic.
Treatment advocates say that overprescribing painkillers is a sure-fire way to get someone addicted.
Opponents say the law is arbitrary and takes the judgment call away from the prescribing doctor.
The new law was part of a package of bills passed last week in Albany to address the heroin problem.
