Creator wins by a nose at 148th running of the Belmont Stakes
Creator closed with a rush and caught Destin at the wire to win the $1.5 million Belmont Stakes on Saturday, with Preakness winner Exaggerator finishing well back in the field.
The Belmont Stakes is the third leg of horse racing's Triple Crown series, behind the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, although this year no horse has a chance at the coveted title.
Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano says this year's Belmont Stakes could boost the local economy by as much as $10 million.
Attendees told News 12 that the crowd was not as jam-packed as in previous years. For some, that's not a problem at all.
"It's a beautiful day, much less crowded, but it makes it nicer for everyone who is here," said Loretta Tumbarello, of West Hempstead.
