Police: 81-year-old woman killed in Brentwood hit-and-run

Police say a woman was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Brentwood.

Maria Carmelina Arroba Gavilanez, 81, was walking on Ferris Avenue near the intersection of O'Rourke Street when she was struck around 7:15 a.m., police say. She was pronounced dead a short time later.

The vehicle is described as light in color. It fled eastbound.

Gavilanez was a mother of nine and a grandmother to more than 40. Her son Nelson Palomino says she had been on a monthlong visit from Ecuador.

"She was the support of all the family," Palomino says.

Neighbors in Brentwood say speeding has been an ongoing problem in the community.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
