Some Centereach residents say long-neglected potholes on their dead-end street are affecting their quality of life.

Residents on Pine Street say they have called Town of Brookhaven for years about the issue but have not seen repairs.

Renee and Steven Sokolowski claim they can't teach their kids how to ride their bikes or take their toddlers out for walks because it's too dangerous. They say the town has come to fill some of the potholes, but the street hasn't been paved for over 20 years.

They say they're raising the issue now because their 3-year-old son tripped and fell last week.

"My 3-year-old should be able to play down our own street and not have to worry about the hazards of the road," Renee Sokolowski says.

The Sokolowskis say the problem still exists because they live on a low-priority dead-end street. 

"We definitely feel like a low priority, but our taxes don't reflect that," Steven Sokolowski says.

The Sokolowskis say their neighbors have also reported the conditions to the town, to no avail.

"I've been living here about 21 years," says neighbor Bob Gardner. "This street has never been paved."

Gardner says the town did recently add extra storm drains to the road to help alleviate flooding, but the pavement, or lack thereof, remains a problem.

"I have stretches on my road where there's not even pavement," says Steve Sokolowski. "It's not just potholes. It's 20-foot long sections where the whole layer is ripped up."

News 12 reached out to Town of Brookhaven Superintendent of Highways Daniel Losquadro, who says workers were out on Pine Street in March to refill some of the potholes. 

Losquadro says the town is aware of the conditions and that Pine Street is on a "high priority list." 

"I'm hoping to get in there next year," Losquadro says.
