Fundraiser held for family of fallen Coram airman
More than 350 people gathered at the Coram Fire Department Saturday night to show their support for the family of an Air National Guardsman who was killed while on a mission in Afghanistan last December.
The event aimed to raise $20,000 for the family of Staff Sgt. Louis Bonacasa. His wife, Deborah Bonacasa, says it has been a tough road for her and their 5-year-old daughter, Lily.
"She's my strength. So I just know I have to keep moving and do it for her, and that's what my husband would have wanted me to do," she told News 12 Long Island.
The organizer of the fundraiser, Nancy Roesler, had never met the Bonacasa family before Saturday's auction event.
"This is just from the heart... the whole community, from the heart," said Roesler.
