Video captures attack on Hempstead gas station clerk
Police are looking for the man seen on surveillance video attacking a gas station clerk after being caught using a fraudulent credit card in Hempstead.
The attack happened back in January at the Apple Green station on Peninsula Boulevard, and authorities have just released the surveillance video in their search for the suspect. Police say a man entered the shop and attempted to pay for some items using a credit card, but the clerk recognized it as a fake.
"What he did was he swiped the card, and he realized that after the receipt came out, the number on the face of the card and the number on the receipt were two different numbers, therefore the magnetic strip had been tampered with," says Nassau Chief of Detectives Kevin Smith.
At that point, the suspect became enraged and went behind the counter. He pummeled the clerk and slammed him to the ground. Police say the clerk tried to get away, but the suspect picked him up and slammed him to the ground again, and beat him about the head.
The clerk suffered a fractured skull, torn ligaments, swelling and contusions around his body.
Police are hoping that good-quality surveillance video of the attack will lead to an arrest. Detectives are also looking for a female who was with the suspect at the time.
Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
