New FDA guidelines look to cut salt content in food
The FDA is asking restaurants and food manufacturers to voluntarily cut the salt they add to their food by one-third over the next decade.
The move comes as health officials say nine in 10 Americans consume too much sodium and one in three have high blood pressure.
According to officials, the average sodium consumption in the United States is currently about 3,400 milligrams a day. The new guidelines are aimed at getting the public down to about 2,300 a day.
Some registered dieticians say even if the FDA acts on it, it may not make much of a difference.
Dietician Madeleine Berg tells News 12 that 70 percent of the salt consumed in this country comes from processed food.
The American Heart Association already endorsed the new guidelines.
