PSEG Long Island is proposing to build a new power substation in North Lindenhurst to strengthen its system.

PSEG spokesman Jeffrey Weir says the company wants to build the substation in a vacant lot on the corner of Berry Street and Wellwood Avenue. Without a substation, Weir says, there could be more power outages in the area.

"A new substation is required to bring more power to this area to enhance the reliability and resiliency for this load pocket," says Weir.

Some residents tell News 12 Long Island that they are worried about devalued property in North Lindenhurst, as well as long-term health risks from living near a substation.

Weir says PSEG "would never do anything to impact our customers' health."

PSEG says it is trying to work with residents by looking at two alternative sites for the substation.

There is no set date for a final decision on the proposal.
