Police: 2 struck, killed after exiting vehicle on LIE
Police say two people were killed following an accident on the Long Island Expressway Monday night in Old Westbury.
According to police, a car was traveling westbound on the LIE when it hit the guardrail and then the median divider between exits 40 and 39.
Police say all four occupants exited the disabled car in the HOV lane on a "dark portion of the expressway."
According to police, that is when a truck driven by a 33-year-old male struck the BMW, forcing two victims standing outside the vehicle over the divider onto the eastbound lanes.
The 20-year-old driver of the disabled car was pronounced dead at the scene. An 18-year-old female was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The other passengers outside the vehicle, an 18-year-old female and a 19-year-old male, survived the crash.
Police say the driver of the truck suffered minor injuries and was not charged with a crime.
The names of the deceased have not been released, pending family notification.
