Democrats in the Nassau Legislature will call on the county Monday to reopen a police precinct in Manhasset that was shuttered in 2012 as part of a restructuring plan.

The lawmakers, led by Legislator Ellen Birnbaum, will call on County Executive Ed Mangano and the Republican majority to restore the 6th Precinct, News 12 is told. Police personnel and civilian employees are still stationed at the building, but the lawmakers are calling for it to be fully restored amid a reported increase in crime in the community.

PBA President James Carver agrees with the plan, telling News 12, "The Nassau County Police department is increasing manpower... I think they have the manpower to reconsider opening the precinct."

Still, the Nassau Police Department and county officials say that re-instituting the building as a precinct won't necessarily lead to a decrease in crime.

Mangano spokesman Brian Nevin says, "Since the merger, crime is down, taxpayers are saving money, the building has always remained open with police inside and Legislator Birnbaum knows darn well that her partisan refusal to support the capital plan hinders the County's ability to make building improvements at the precinct and throughout her district."

The Democrats will unveil their plan shortly before tomorrow's public meeting of the county Legislature, which begins at 1 p.m. in Mineola.
