House being raised in Babylon collapses

A rebuilt Sandy-damaged home collapsed Tuesday as it was being elevated in Babylon.

The collapse happened Tuesday night on Yacht Club Road. Homeowner Randy Stewart says the pillars beneath his home gave out within a minute and a half. No one was hurt.

Crews from the Town of Babylon brought the rest of the home to the ground on Wednesday.

Stewart says his home was first destroyed by Superstorm Sandy. He rebuilt it only to be told by FEMA that he had to elevate it, so it was put on temporary pillars until a new, elevated foundation could be installed.

The project was delayed, Stewart says, because he didn't receive the necessary funds from New York Rising.

While work was ongoing, Stewart has been living in a nearby rental and say he'll continue to do so. He has no plans to again rebuild the house.

Stewart does not blame the company that put his house on sticks, but says he does blame New York Rising for not getting funds to finish the job in time.

A spokesperson for New York Rising says that Stewart has received $163,000 - a large portion of which was earmarked for the elevation project. That spokesperson also says Stewart is due a total of $315,000, which he has not received.
