Oceanside homes damaged after water main break
Monday's water main break in Oceanside caused flooding that damaged a number of homes.
Residents living on Pearl Street watched as a gaping hole in the street spewed water, forcing emergency crews to evacuate the area Monday. The water crept up driveways and seeped into some houses.
Members of the Morales family were hit hard during Sandy and were forced to renovate their home. Now, the family is faced once again with having to make repairs. New kitchen cabinets that had not yet been installed were damaged. In addition, furniture and other items were damaged when water seeped into a part of the house.
Homeowner Eric Morales says the fire department arrived with a raft to rescue his wife and their dogs as water flooded the area. The Morales family has filed a claim with its insurance company as well as the water company New York American Water.
The company says it will work with homeowners' insurance companies as well as its own insurance company to pay for the damage.
Water service was restored to homeowners by early Tuesday morning. New York American Water says it is safe to drink.
