Petition calls for DA Spota's removal
Dozens of people have signed a petition calling for Suffolk District Attorney Thomas Spota to step down or be removed from office.
The petition was started on MoveOn.org and it cites an article in the state constitution that says governors can remove district attorneys.
It comes amid corruption allegations that have prompted County Executive Steve Bellone, several Suffolk legislators and the Suffolk sheriff to call for Spota's resignation.
Bellone says he has contacted Gov. Andrew Cuomo about Spota but has not yet called on the governor to remove the DA.
Spota maintains that he has does nothing wrong and has said he will not resign. He has said Bellone's call for him to step down is because of a "personal vendetta."
