State and local officials have announced an action plan as fears grow over the mosquito-borne Zika virus.

The six-point plan was laid out this afternoon in Smithtown.

Some steps include distributing tablets that kill mosquito eggs, giving out protection kits to pregnant women and launching a PSA campaign on TV, radio and social media.

State Health Commissioner Howard Zucker said all the measures taken together are going to protect New Yorkers from the potentially devastating consequences, including the heartbreak of giving birth to a baby with microcephaly.

Microcephly is a birth defect in which babies are born with abnormally small heads.

So far there have been four confirmed Zika cases on Long Island. However, no one in the United States has contracted the virus through a mosquito bite here.
