Islip Town Board votes to increase their own salaries
The Islip Town Board passed a law Tuesday to increase their own salaries by as much as 4 percent every year beginning in January.
Board members currently make $78,000 a year.
Trish Bergin-Weichbrodt was one of two council members who voted no on the measure.
"This town board is certainly well compensated for the work that they do. This is a second income for everyone on the board except for me. So I think $78,000 as a second income is just fine for everybody," she says
Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, whose salary would also see an up to 4 percent bump, would not speak with News 12 on camera, but said in a statement, "We have taken a good hard look at all salaries in the town and have made adjustments to begin to bridge the gap that exists across the board when comparing salaries in Islip with other municipalities."
While Islip board members currently make $78,000 a year, officials in neighboring Brookhaven, which is nearly three times the size of Islip, say their board members make just under $68,000 a year.
Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron and Bergin-Weichbrodt say they plan to donate the extra money. Along with the supervisor and the board members, the town clerk and the receiver of taxes will also benefit from the increase.
