Police: Red light camera vandalized in Coram

Police are searching for the person responsible for vandalizing a red light camera location in Coram.
The incident occurred near the intersection of County Road 83 and Old Town Road on Monday night.
Police said that between 6:45 p.m. and 8:20 p.m., someone sawed an aluminum pole that was propping up a red light camera.
Stephen Ruth, who has pending charges for red light camera tampering in Ronkonkoma, denied any knowledge of Monday's vandalism.

"You can't shorten yellow lights just to increase revenue," Ruth told News 12. "Throwing our safety out the window and expect nobody to do anything about it."

Other drivers said opposition to the red light program doesn't give someone the right to vandalize.
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
Suffolk is maintaining 100 red light cameras at various high-traffic or dangerous road locations.
