Worker at UCP home in Central Islip charged in sexual abuse of teen with cerebral palsy

A worker at a home for people with cerebral palsy is facing sexual abuse charges.

Police say 65-year-old William Edel was arrested and charged with inappropriately touching a 14-year-old girl in Central Islip

Police say it happened at a UCP home on Atlantic Avenue, which is a residence for people with cerebral palsy.

The United Cerebral Palsy Association of Greater Suffolk issued a statement saying it is working with Suffolk County police, but that it could not discuss any further details because it was an ongoing investigation.

Edel pleaded not guilty in court Monday to charges of sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a disabled person.

He told News 12 by phone that he's been working at UCP for five years and that he has a clean record. He maintains his innocence.
