Police: 2 hurt after teen crashes car during drag race in Hempstead

Police say a Copiague teen is accused of crashing her car during a drag race and injuring her two passengers.



According to police, Cristela Umana-Herrera was racing on Front Street in Hempstead when she hit a utility pole at West Orchard Street around 4 a.m. Sunday. 



Police say a woman and man in her car suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.



The 19-year-old driver suffered a serious head injury.



Umana-Herrera is charged with assault and taking part in an illegal speed contest.
