Absentee ballots are being counted for the contested Oyster Bay town supervisor race.

Democratic challenger John Mangelli declared victory on Election Day, seemingly ending John Venditto's run as supervisor. He has been in the position since 1998.

The race was deemed too close to call, as Mangelli was ahead by only 68 votes. The Nassau County Board of Elections says there are still 1,700 absentee ballots to be counted, along with 131 affidavit ballots.

"We will work on this in a bipartisan spirit to make sure every legitimate vote is counted in this very close election," says Democratic Board of Elections Commissioner David Gugerty.

Gugerty says if all goes according to plan, the board will have a solid count by the middle of next week. He also told News 12 that there is already a lawsuit pending in the race - meaning the election could be heading to court.

Republican Board of Elections Commissioner Louis Savinetti declined to comment about the race.
