Police: Uniondale man subdues burglar inside home

A Uniondale homeowner was able to subdue a burglar after being attacked with a wooden paddle, police say.

Authorities say Jamell Ramsay, of Queens, broke into the home on Atom Court through a basement window and collected $500 worth of what police called "glass mementos."

According to Detective Lt. Richard LeBrun, Ramsay located the homeowner - who had been sleeping - and demanded money and food.

Police say the homeowner -- who did not want to be named -- then wrestled Ramsay to the ground, despite being struck by a wooden paddle the suspect had found in the home.

His teenaged son then called police, who arrested Ramsay.

"You're not gonna steal from my family," the homeowner told News 12. "You're not gonna steal from my community. I did what I had to do."

Ramsay was arraigned Wednesday on several charges, including first-degree burglary and criminal possession of a weapon.
