A vote may have put the brakes on big rigs along South Oyster Bay Road, but it could also mean a fight between the town and state.
Residents who live along South Oyster Bay Road say oversized tractor-trailers are constantly barreling down the four-mile stretch of road between the Long Island Expressway and Route 107.
They say their lives have been severely affected by the noise of the trucks, the diesel fumes they create and the danger of driving along a road that seems to be more packed with tractor-trailers than ever.
Last night, the Oyster Bay Town Board voted unanimously on legislation to ban oversized trucks from South Oyster Bay Road.
The only problem is that back in December, the state designated the road as a truck access highway. The question remains which government, the town or the state, has the final say.
"We are prepared to take this as far as we need to and do the right thing for the people who live here," says Rebecca Alesia, an Oyster Bay town spokesperson.
