Police: 9-year-old dies after dog attack in Elmont
Police say a 9-year-old girl died in Elmont Sunday after being attacked by a pit bull.
Police say a woman was at a home on Holland Avenue as three girls played in the backyard with the homeowner's dog. According to police, the homeowner was not present at the time of the incident.
Authorities say that the woman called 911 after she was unable to stop the attack.
Three officers responded to the incident. They say when the dog began to attack one of them, they shot and killed the dog.
The victim, who was visiting at the time of the incident, was transported to Franklin Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. Her name is being withheld pending family notification.
Authorities say the owner of the dog, Carlyle Arnold, of Elmont, was arrested at the scene for an unrelated charge of violation of an order of protection.
