Mastic bicyclist dies in Montauk Hwy. accident
A Mastic bicyclist died in a collision with a van on Montauk Highway Wednesday morning.
Police say Peter Accardi Jr., 61, swerved into oncoming traffic near Fulton Avenue. His sister, Christine Accardi, also of Mastic, says he had recently gotten engaged.
Accardi says her brother had planned to move to Pennsylvania with the woman who helped turn his life around, Jessica.
Some in the Mastic community say that stretch of road is dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists.
Police say Accardi had been riding his bicycle eastbound on the westbound side of the road.
"You're supposed to travel 30 to 35 mph," says John Sicignano, of the Mastic Park Civic Association. "Some people are doing 50."
Police are asking anyone with information on the crash to call Suffolk's 7th Precinct at 631-852-8752.
