Thousands attend funeral of slain NYPD officer
Long Island police officers were among thousands of people attending the funeral Wednesday for an NYPD officer who was gunned down in the line of duty last week.
About 30,000 officers stood vigil in the pouring rain outside Greater Allen African Methodist Episcopal Cathedral when the funeral for Officer Randolph Holder began.
Holder was posthumously promoted to the rank of detective, as have other officers recently killed in the line of duty.
Holder is the fourth NYPD officer fatally shot on the job in the past 11 months. The others are Brian Moore, of Massapequa, and Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos.
A grand jury indicted Holder's accused killer, Tyrone Howard, on charges of murder and robbery Tuesday. Investigators have described Howard as a career criminal.
Relatives have described Holder as a humble, hardworking man who was in the process of moving his family to Long Island.
He was a third-generation police officer who friends say took great pride in his job.
Holder will be buried in his native Guyana.
