Parks Dept. ups patrols at psych center
The State Parks Department announced Tuesday that it's tightening security on the grounds of the former Kings Park Psychiatric Center.
The abandoned facility may be one of the spookiest places on Long Island, especially near Halloween.
State police will step up patrols and crack down on unauthorized people and vehicles, according to officials.
The fenced-off buildings attract people year around, officials say, but are even more popular around Halloween as people seek out supposedly haunted places.
George Gorman of the Parks Department says that the buildings are closed off because they contain toxic chemicals like asbestos and unsafe underground tunnels.
Three years ago, three teens had to be rescued from one of the buildings when a door they walked through shut and locked behind them.
