Nearly three years after Superstorm Sandy, one South Shore community is preparing for future storms.
Freeport Mayor Robert Kennedy announced Monday that a bulkhead destroyed during Sandy has been rebuilt. Kennedy said it will help protect the area from future storms.
Kennedy said more needs to be done. He called for a feasability study on the installation of "stormwater gates" that would close to protect the coastline from a large storm.
"Another Sandy would have a devastating effect on the long-term residency of the waterfront community, and a financial burden on our community located in the flood zone," Kennedy warned.
About 3,500 homes were flooded in Freeport during Sandy, and several hundred are still vacant.
Mayor Kennedy said he plans on having a meeting in late November to talk about the potential costs and effects of the stormwater gates.
