Ex-officer from LI accused in machete murder
A former police officer from Centereach is accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend with a machete and then jumping in front of a train.
Investigators say former NYPD Officer Arthur Lomando stabbed his ex, 48-year-old Suzanne Bardzell, to death Thursday afternoon in her car in front of her Midland Park, New Jersey, home.
Police say Lomando then threw himself in front of subway train in Manhattan after the attack. He survived, but suffered severe head injuries and lost both of his legs.
Lomando was fired from the NYPD in 2004 for misconduct and mental health concerns.
Bardzell was a special education teacher in Teaneck, New Jersey. She leaves behind two teenage sons.
The couple had dated for about three years after meeting online, but their tumultuous relationship caused Bardzell to seek a restraining order against Lomando earlier this month, according to investigators.
Police say he violated that restraining several times, an a warrant was issued for his arrest. Lomando at first refused to come out when police went to his home, but he wound up turning himself in and posting bail.
Lomando now faces charges including murder, possession of a weapon and violating a restraining order.
