Pursuit with child in car ends with mother's arrest
A mother pursued by police while her 11-year-old son was in the car was arrested after an allegedly robbery in Hempstead.
Police say the incident started at the BP gas station on Peninsula Boulevard in Hempstead. They say Kenyatta Jackson, 30, and two other suspects lured another man to the location so they could buy sneakers from him. When he arrived at the gas station, they allegedly robbed him of two pairs of Jordan sneakers and $500 at gunpoint.
Authorities say Jackson was behind the wheel with the two other suspects and her son as they fled from the robbery. The victim had called police and followed the alleged robbers in his own vehicle.
Prosecutors say Jackson hit speeds of up to 120 mph through Hempstead and Uniondale. They eventually raced down the Southern State, Meadowbrook and Wantagh parkways.
Prosecutors say one of the robbery suspects leaned out of Jackson's car and fired gunshots at one point.
Police say Jackson's car hit a guardrail during the chase, causing one of the police cruisers to rear-end her. The officer suffered a broken ankle as a result. Jackson was arrested at the scene while the two suspects fled into the woods. They have not yet been found.
Jackson's son was not injured during the incident.
Jackson was arraigned Tuesday in Hempstead, charged with robbery and endangering the welfare of a child.
