Two people were killed in an early morning wrong-way crash on the Northern State Parkway Tuesday.
Police say the incident was the result of a police pursuit that ended in a crash between exits 41 and 42.
Police say the chase started after a woman was pulled over under suspicion of DWI in a possibly stolen vehicle. News 12 has confirmed she was pulled over in the parking lot of 7-Eleven on Motor Parkway and Carleton Avenue in Central Islip. A surveillance camera at a nearby store caught the interaction between the suspect and police.
Detective Lt. Darrel Simmons says the suspect refused to comply and then fled the scene in the SUV. Investigators say the driver almost hit the officer as she drove off. The police vehicle followed in pursuit.
Police say the SUV driver was heading westbound in the eastbound lanes of the Northern State Parkway when she slammed into a car traveling eastbound. Both drivers were killed.
The names of the deceased drivers have not yet been released. It is not yet clear where the suspect entered the Northern State Parkway or how fast she was driving.
The roadway was closed for most of the morning, creating heavy traffic for commuters.
