Police: Car stolen with baby in back seat
A mother and child were reunited Monday after someone stole a car with the baby in the back seat.
Police say Gail Solomon, of Bay Shore, went into Subway on Union Boulevard in Bay Shore and left her infant niece inside a running vehicle at around 8 a.m.
Police say while Solomon was inside the store, the vehicle was stolen with 4-month-old Zuriel James still inside.
A Subway employee says once the aunt realized the car had been stolen with the baby inside, she took off down the street chasing after it and yelling "Stop, stop don't take the car."
Suffolk police say the suspect then picked up two other people down the road. Police patrols immediately began canvassing the neighborhood. The baby was found unharmed.
"I happened to turn down a side street and noticed a running car that matched the description," says Michael Ciardullo, of the Suffolk police. "I went over to it and saw the baby inside."
Solomon, 43, was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor of endangering the welfare of a child.
Anyone with information is asked to call Suffolk County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
