Grief counselors on hand for classmates of slain girl
Hempstead residents are demanding action following the death of a 12-year-old girl who was struck by a stray bullet.
Police say Dejah Joyner was having dinner in her living room Friday evening when she was hit in the head by a bullet that shattered a window of her Dartmouth Street home.
She died Saturday from her injuries.
Police don't believe that Joyner was targeted, and Newsday is reporting the shooting may be gang-related
A steady stream of friends and family paid their respects at Joyner's home on Dartmouth Street Monday.
Grief counselors and a special crisis team were available at Alverta Gray Schultz Middle School to help Joyner's schoolmates.
A $75,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the child's killer. Anyone with information is asked to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
