Rally held to preserve open space in Miller Place

A rally was held Thursday to preserve more than 5 acres of open space in Miller Place.
The undeveloped land is adjacent to Suffolk County's Cordwood Landing Nature Preserve.
The battle over its fate has been going on for about five years, and now a developer is poised to build on it.
In the past, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine said the town would pay 30 percent of the total cost of the land to preserve it. On Thursday, he said he will increase the pledge and work with the county to help acquire it.
Activist Tom Kramer claims the county hasn't done enough to try to preserve the property, but Legislator Sarah Anker says she's done everything she can to save it.
Anker, who represents the area, says the land was appraised at $930,000 six months ago. The developer says he was not willing to sell because he believes it's worth more.
