Police: Driver critical after Sunrise Highway crash
A crash on Sunrise Highway in Patchogue left a driver in critical condition and shut down westbound lanes to traffic Tuesday afternoon.
Police say Robert Hommel, 29, was speeding when he slammed into a cement column at Hospital Road at around 2:20 p.m. They say he was ejected through the sunroof of his 2015 Audi.
Hommel was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue.
Police closed all westbound lanes on Sunrise Highway between Station and Hospital roads. The hourslong closure caused major delays in the eastbound lanes.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
