Stony Brook Hospital aims to sign up organ donors
Have a heart, Long Island.
Stony Brook University Medical Center launched a campaign Tuesday to sign people up to become organ donors.
In terms of percentage of state residents, New York is last in the nation when it comes to registered organ donors.
Donor recipients told their stories Tuesday as a way of encouraging people to donate. Linda Morales, now a mother of three, received a kidney transplant when she was just 19.
"People can have children after having that transplant. Generations go on because of that one act," Morales said.
Similar donor drives were held at Stony Brook University and at the Smith Haven Mall.
There are more than 10,000 people in the state currently on waiting lists for an organ donation.
